KANAL42 is inspired by the input stage of a vintage cassette 4-track — but it’s not just another saturation plugin.

TRIM is where it starts. Push the input and the signal begins to change even with DRIVE at zero. The sound gains substance, the response becomes more immediate, and the Sound feels less like a direct signal.

From there, DRIVE takes it further — from subtle saturation and crunch to dense, broken-up distortion, continuously changing the character as you push it.

KANAL42 is inspired by the sound and feel of driving a vintage cassette multitrack input. Use it on recorded tracks or directly while recording to add cassette-style input saturation, density and character to guitars, bass, drums, synths and other sources.

Instead of simply adding distortion, Kanal42 uses the interaction between DRIVE and TRIM to explore different ways of pushing the saturation stage. DRIVE changes both the amount and character of the saturation, while TRIM controls how hard the input is driven into it.

What makes KANAL42 special:

Pure cassette input saturation — designed around the sound of pushing a vintage cassette 4-track input stage beyond its clean operating range.
DRIVE changes the character — increasing DRIVE doesn’t simply add more distortion; the saturation continuously changes in asymmetry, bass response, pressure and high-frequency character.
TRIM pushes the input — higher TRIM drives the internal preamp harder into saturation.
DRIVE + TRIM interaction — low DRIVE with high TRIM can produce heavy distortion with a distinctly different character than high DRIVE with lower TRIM.
Find your sweet spot — the character of Kanal42 comes from finding the right balance between DRIVE and TRIM.
Tone shaping — use the EQ to shape the final character after the saturation stage.

Depth & Position: These two controls
interact closely:
Depth determines the intensity of the modulation.
Position sets where in the modulation cycle the phase shift occurs.
Together, they shape the character and movement of the flanging effect.

Offset: Applies a time shift
to the modulated signal relative to the dry signal, similar to a pre-delay
Useful for rhythmic alignment and creating a sense of spatial depth.

Feedback: Feeds part of the processed signal back into the input of the effect. Can be set to
positive or negative
values:
Positive feedback produces classic, resonant flanging with a metallic tone.
Negative feedback causes phase-inverted regeneration, leading to a darker, more hollow sound.
The feedback polarity creates a fundamentally different character.
Higher values intensify the effect and can lead to self-oscillation.

Your purchase includes the complete, self-contained RNBO C++ export folder, containing:

The core RNBO C++ library (RNBO.cpp, RNBO.h) and your patch’s specific logic.
A description.json file detailing all parameters, inputs, and outputs.
A pre-configured CMake build system to simplify compilation on your target platform.
